Description: Texture is the element that sets the coarse coat apart from other dog coat types. To preserve natural texture, coarse-coated breeds need grooming products that impart volume. Products that leave behind a film, as well as the build-up of natural oils, will weigh down the coat and destroy the natural texture. The conception that conditioners should not be used on coarse coats is not true. The correct conditioner is an important part of grooming these breeds and maintaining the coarse coat. Moisturizing shampoos and conditioners cause the coat to go limp and interfere with the hard, crisp texture that is the goal. A clarifying type shampoo and a rich protein conditioner are correct for coarse coat breeds such as Huskies, German Shepherds, Collies, Newfoundlands, Sheepdogs, Poodles, Pomeranians, and dogs with similar coat structure. This combination also works well for double-coated breeds such as sheepdogs and retrievers. These breeds require frequent bathing which helps remove the dead undercoat which will be replaced with fresh, strong undercoat to support the coarse outercoat for a well-groomed look. Coarse coats are rough to the touch and can be medium length or long. The hair does not have a standard length and varies throughout the coat. Coarse-coated breeds usually have a softer, down undercoat covered with harder guard hairs. Brushing is extremely important and the correct brush must be constructed to easily get through the often dense guard hairs all the way through the undercoat to the skin. Following a good brush-out, a heavy weight comb is most useful to go through the coat and furnishings. Finally, a comb with evenly spaced teeth is ideal for the fluff and perfect finishing.
