Once the Romans had occupied as much of England as it could, the province became known as Britannia. Over time, Britannia came into being as a mythical figure that Britons believed protected the Isles from invaders. On the obverse of the 10 oz British Silver Britannia Bar is the image of Britannia created just for this collection. This new vision of Britannia is inspired by classical artwork and features a right-profile portrait of her figure with a trident in one hand and a shield with the Union Jack emblazoned upon it in the other. She wears a lightly armored chest plate and a Corinthian helmet. The reverse face of British Silver Britannia Bars features the seal of the Royal Mint of England at the top. Below it are engravings of the weight, purity, and metal content of the bar. The background field of both sides includes waving lines, while the bottom of this side of the bar has additional waves of the sea in the design element. The Royal Mint of England was founded in 886 by Alfred the Great and unified as a singular minting system in 1279.
