Nicknamed “The Flying Fin” because of its large tail fin, the Tornado has a variable wing sweep design and is capable of taking off and landing on short airstrips. It is equipped with terrain-following radar, which allows for hands-off, low-level flight in any weather. There are three primary versions: an electronic combat/reconnaissance version, an interceptor and a highly versatile strike fighter-bomber capable of carrying almost all of NATO’s air-launched weapons. German Navy (Marineflieger)The German Navy’s Marineflieger received 122 Tornado IDS to replace the F-104G Starfighter for anti-shipping and reconnaissance. These Tornados equipped two wings, each with a nominal strength of 48 aircraft. The principal anti-ship weapon was the AS.34 Kormoran anti-ship missile, which were initially supplemented by unguided bombs and BL755 cluster munitions, and later by AGM-88 HARM anti-radar missiles. Pods fitted with panoramic optical cameras and an infrared line scan were carried for the reconnaissance mission. The end of the Cold War and the signing of the CFE Treaty led Germany to reduce the size of its armed forces, including the number of combat aircraft. To meet this need, one of the Marineflieger’s Tornado wings was disbanded on 1 January 1994; its aircraft replaced the Phantoms of a Luftwaffe reconnaissance wing. The second wing was enlarged and continued in the anti-shipping, reconnaissance and anti-radar roles until it was disbanded in 2005 with its aircraft and duties passed on to the Luftwaffe. Marineflieger MFG 2Marineflieger MFG 2 operated from Eggebeck, Germany between 1986 and 2005. Starting in 1993 MFG 2 was comprised of 3 squadrons, 1st, 2nd and 3rd. The first two were operational squadrons while the 3rd looked after training pilots and WSOs. In 2005 MFG 2 was disbanded and all its aircraft and duties were ceded to the Luftwaffe.
