It contained 6 cars and was sold in a polystyrene and cardboard box. It contained the new 1138 car transporter. ( replacing the 1105) The cars issued with the 1st set at that time, were the 440 Ford Cortina, 251 Hilman Imp, 252 Rover 2000, 249 Mini Cooper deluxe, 321 Monte carlo Mini Cooper and lastly the 226 Mini Minor. ( You will sometimes also see sets where the Bronze Imp is being replaced by the blue Imp, or the blue cortina's being replaced by a red one etc etc, this simply enabled Corgi to get rid of surplus, unwanted or less popular stock.)Gift set 41 was the number used when this set was 1st sold through mail order only. ( Corgi had a deal with numerous mail order companies) 36,000 would be sold during the year to mail order houses. It would also shortly be available for the export market under its general number of Gift set 48. It would not be available on general release at home in the UK until the end of the year to target the Christmas market, where it appeared as the same models but in a larger display box where each vehicle had its own compartment. In December 1967 there was a slight adjustment to the set where the Corgi 333 Sun rally Mini was a substitute for the 321 Mini Cooper, this was simply to dispose of stock of the 333. ( The 333 made its one and only appearance in a Corgi catalogue in the 67-68 issue) In May 1969 the carrimore Mk 4 car transporter with Scammell Handyman Mk 3 cab, was issued. (1148) This was the previous transporter's rear but without the plated side panels, in order to cut costs. It was coupled to the newer and cheaper to produce cab, the Scammel Handyman mark 3 tractor unit. Gift set 48 was also renewed this month to include the new 1148 transporter, the car models were all changed and the set now consisted of the following: 345 MGCGT, 339 Monte Carlo Mini Cooper, 340 Monte Carlo Imp, 334 Mini Cooper magnifique, 226 Morris minor, 258 The Saints Volvo, with a new red label and the Saint"s symbol. The Transporter sets were a good way for Corgi of getting rid of un-sold models such as the more expensive 334 mini for the 249 model, and on occasions issued an odd variation in colour such as changing the yellow and black MGC to a bright orange which was to be sold only in the transporter sets. The rare spoke wheel set included the 258 having a change of wheels to match the others. This model does NOT include the rare Corgi 333, a BMC Mini Cooper S which Corgi were also giving away free ( Corgi were expecting them to come 1st in the RAC rally as in previous years, but in 1966 I think they came 5th even the attempt to say they were the 1st British team to finish didn't help, so they were disposed of quickly) via competitions in the Sun Newspaper or painting competitions such as Car of the future competitions where children under a certain age submitted their ideas to win a 333. Today the 333 is one of the most sort after models by collectors as it only appeared for a very short time in any order forms and was completely disposed of by early 1968.This set was released by Corgi in October 1970, (As a replacement for CGS 48 which had already had several changes ) again for the Christmas market, under pressure to update their image they used the same frame/bodies as in previous models but now added a new type of wheel known as Whizzwheels along with limited edition red spot hubcaps which you can see in this example with the silver Pontiac Firebird.
