Shu-saku was the heir to the 14th Honinbo, Shuwa, but he died from cholera before he had a chance to succeed Shuwa as the head of the Honinbo go house. Although he only reached 7-dan, he established himself as the top player of the day. He was victorious in every important match he played and he set an unprecedented record of nineteen straight wins over a period of thirteen years in the annual 'castle games'. His games still enjoy immense popularity in Japan and have become required reading for all serious students of the game. He left a legacy of games which have been an inspiration to succeeding generations.
